Humble Service
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:3-8
Humility. What an easy word to say: Humility. As I sit and contemplate this word, I think of the difficulty I sometimes have in living it. There was a time in my life when I did not even understand what it meant to be humble. A friend once told me that the simplest definition of humility would be to know myself as I truly am, flaws and assets alike, and to want to be as God would have me. That is the best definition I can offer. Humility is not a feeling, it is an action. If I am truly living in humble relation with Christ, then I want to be of service to others; to His kingdom as a whole. I am no better nor worse than any other. God gives me the amazing desire to be of usefulness to all people, not just the ones who I think belong in my "circle". In fact, that fear is lifted. True humility gives me the ability to see everyone as my friend. I have grown so much doing service work that I am uncomfortable in. God loved me so much that He sent His son to save me. The best I can do is share that love with others. Here is the best part: I don't have to be perfect at it! God knows that I am flawed, I'm human! I can only strive to be as holy as God would want me. I will fail sometimes. But, I get the opportunity to take God's hand and start walking in his path again. Each day, I wake up and do my best to live up to God's standards. I may not be perfect at it, in fact, sometimes I'm not very good. Never the less, I ask him humbly for the ability to try. This Week!
